Travellers International Hotel Group is making headlines with its ambitious plan to expand its gaming and leisure portfolio in Cebu, Philippines. The company, known for developing Newport World Resorts (formerly Resorts World Manila), is now focusing on a major new project: Mactan World Resorts.
Mactan World Resorts: A Major Investment
The proposed integrated resort, Mactan World Resorts, represents a significant investment valued at around Php16.9 billion (US$300 million). It will be situated on a 30-hectare site within the Mactan Newtown township, a development area by Megaworld Corp. This location is just 20 minutes from Mactan-Cebu International Airport, enhancing its appeal to international travelers.
Strategic Expansion into Cebu
The project details were first revealed by SunStar Cebu following a presentation to local government officials by Georgina Alvarez, Travellers’ Executive Director. The development has received strong local support, including a resolution from the local government recommending Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan issue a certificate of “no objection” to advance the project.
Economic and Strategic Benefits
Mactan World Resorts is set to offer a range of facilities, including a luxury hotel and top casinos real money, and is expected to bring substantial economic benefits. Projected contributions to real property and business taxes are estimated at about Php243 million (US$4.3 million) over the next five years. Analyst Alfred Benjamin R. Garcia highlighted the strategic benefits of the location, noting Cebu’s strong appeal to tourists and its proximity to the international airport.
Travellers’ Broader Vision
Kevin Tan, CEO and Chairman of Travellers, discussed the company’s expansion strategy in an interview with Inside Asian Gaming. He expressed enthusiasm for expanding beyond Metro Manila, citing the competitive nature of existing markets and the opportunity for growth in emerging areas like Cebu.
Competitive Landscape
Cebu already features the NUSTAR Resort & Casino, and PH Resorts Group, led by Dennis Uy, is working to secure funding for its Emerald Bay project. These developments contribute to the growing competitive landscape for casinos in the region.
